    Learning to wipe independently is a difficult task to master, as it requires a significant amount of balance, control of posture, body awareness and co-ordination. Being unable to see what you are doing makes it even more difficult. Difficulties with independent wiping is very common for children.  It takes a considerable amount of time for this task to be mastered. Practice is essential.  Often bottom wiping is the last toileting skill the child will learn. Below are a number of strategies/tips to support the development of this skill.

    Your child has to be able to master several skills in order to become independent in going to the toilet. Once they have gained control over their bladder and bowel they need to learn how to clean themselves. This involves being able to reach behind themselves, being able to turn their hand, and knowing where to wipe. The second stage of this process is being able to tear a couple of sheets of toilet paper from the roll and fold them ready to wipe.
